I liked that the novel is set in Italy. This section contains 1,629 words approx. The latter is set in and near Rome and the Vatican. Lives are lost during wars. I'm reading elsewhere here on Goodreads that that's untrue. Eventually he is called home and made to join the army for protection.

A semi biographical story about an Italian teenager Pino Lella who is sent to a convent after Allied forces airstrike destroys his home in Milan. Q: Are historical novels inherently different from contemporary novels, and if so, in what ways? What I enjoyed so much about this historical fiction was that it not a heavy read. My dad actually had a good rapport with General Leyers, especially after saving his life. There is also an epilogue that provides a snapshot of where many of these characters wound up in real life.

First things first, this audiobook is a commitment. This book just emotionally has you hooked. The pacing is inconsistent; some horrific, gut-wrenching events are bizarrely skimmed over, while other insignificant ones are unnecessarily drawn out. Synopsis: Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. Bottom line though, I will not forget my time in it, nor this man's life. More name dropping by Sullivan, including another amazing bit of prophecy in which Pino tells James Dean he shouldn't buy a Porsche because it's too much for him.

I feel in love with Pino and his family and Father Re. His love for Anna Marta will make you weep. Major General Leyers saves four sick children from Platform 21…and from death. Pino and Mimo gladly accept the task and they guide many Jews to safety. And there are also the stories of unaccountable bravery. To me, the book did suffer from being longer than necessary.

Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. Still, this is a strong work and I would recommend it. Poor Dave Eggers got hoodwinked by the wolf in sheep's clothing that was the man in. When Lella's courage falters, he is bolstered by his love for a young woman named Anna, and for the life he dreams they will one day share. Instead, he sells sports cars. The climbing scenes through the mountains gave me a real shot of adrenaline. Bombs start falling and they run home.

I'm surprised now how well he speaks of Leyers now. The source of this inane hyperbole may be the faulty--or eminently cunning--memory of an 89-year-old who has outlived everyone who could dispute his claims so he can, at last, say whatever he chooses. His greatest achievement though, is his role as spy in the war. It gets middling marks from me for the delivery. The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Sullivan, Mark. We really discover what sort of person we are when we are pushed to it. As I say, it's a fascinating story.

When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. And I was able to put in years of research before I started to write. Both the subject of the novel, a young man who actually lived through these extraordinary times and experiences, and the author had compelling stories, and it caught my interest. We learn of what he has witnessed, the transportation of the Jews to Auschwitz, the murders committed and the brutality of the Nazi overlords, the robbing of the Italian treasury, the robbing of Italian treasures and the taking of lives of the innocent. Sullivan provides information about what actually happened to the characters in the novel. We're hoping it turns into an epic. The characters are well-developed, the writing s good, and the plot propels you forward.
